Movers and Losers April 2009

Kicking Tires blog over at Cars.com has their Movers and Losers April 2009 list up – guess whose up in the list again? With an average wait time of 14 days, the Genesis Coupe is squarely planted in the top 10. Interesting is that nowhere else on the list are other more “premium” cars like the the Infiniti G37 – as the list is filtered with criteria such as sales volume and model continuity. Check out their list here!

For Movers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, models that are being phased out, or other factors that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. For the Top 10 Losers, we lower that threshold greatly because low sales bolster the Loser claim, though they could also indicate other factors, like a model being phased out.

Combine the slowly recovering economy with more self-aware consumers, and you’ve got a recipe for big change. I remember when we were in the worst thick of the economic crisis. Hyundai ended up UNDERESTIMATING the demand for the Genesis Coupe. As a result, they ran out of limited slip differentials and had to push back delivery on 3.8 Coupes. In Canada, 2.0′s were all over the place, and 3.8′s hadn’t even touched the ground. The writing was on the wall. People just aren’t willing to get screwed by big name automakers anymore, and the sales show it. When every other car manufacturer (including Porsche, which I love) saw staggering sales, Hyundai was having trouble keeping up with demand.

    Long live the Gen Coupe.
