Pikes Peak, home of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. A contest of driver skill, manufacturer engineering, and raw power all mix into the pot as a car is sent hurtling up the mountain in a fight against a loose surface and the ever persistent pull of gravity. In case you were wondering, this isn’t a specifically prepared car for the hill climb. In fact, it appears to be the car that Rhys Millen uses for drift competitions, powered by the turbocharged V6 powerplant.

“This is the first time Millen is making the run in his new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and he’s evidently driving the same car he has been using in Formula D drift events all year long – complete with the Hyundai V6 powerplant. In fact, the car was trucked to Colorado directly from last weekend’s drift event in Las Vegas.”

SeoulfulRacing has a handful of a Genesis coupe on display, this time a supercharged 3.8L V6 with 430RWHP. Thats more than most entry level sports cars! Combined with the excellent chassis, it should yield a boatload of fun on the road and on the track. They also hint that a kit may be available soon over in the states, so keep your eyes peeled! dynoed at 430rwhp using 0.5 bar (about 8psi) pulley.

AMS did a little hunting around the boost system of the Genesis Coupe in an attempt to see if the BOV is related to the rev-hang issue that people have been reporting. Ivan from AMS installed a prototype BOV system on their Genesis Coupe 2.0T and has posted up his findings, that the rev hang issues seem to be fixed by installing a custom BOV setup. To test this theory, I made a hard pipe to replace soft hose between the throttle body and the factory hard pipe. I installed a Tial Q BOV in the new pipe to supplement the factory BOV. With this installed, the delay getting back into power after a fast shift was nearly eliminated!

At this point, I had the Tial Q plumbed into the vacuum port on the intake manifold. Plumbed like this, you could hear the factory BOV and the Tial Q open at different times. The factory BOV opens first (when the ECU commands it) using vacuum from the vacuum reservoir and then you hear the Tial when the throttle finally closes and the manifold goes into vacuum. This again supports my theory.

Beyond Redline has brought the bar up again with the introduction of their prototype turbo kit for the 2.0T Genesis Coupe. While definate details are not yet available – they do claim their kits will fit all medium frame ball bearing turbochargers, from the GT28R to the GT35R. If reports are as promising as their initial testings, 400whp with a GT30R turbocharger is very attainable, and should provide for a boatload of fun.

One of the biggest questions on everybody’s minds may be, “How did they get this thing together so quickly?” We knew in order to show up and play ball in this game we had to come big and fast, or go home. We studied the service manuals and even ordered a long block long before we even secured our Coupe. We knew that not only did we want to be first to the plate with our offerings; we wanted to make sure our plans were going to work, be solid, and perform extremely well for your dollar. 

Beyond Redline wastes no time at all – shortly after taking apart the engine to examine it, then taking apart the turbo to poke around, now they have bolted a new Garrett GT3076 turbo on with 600cc injectors and done a little tuning of the car with a AEM FIC. The end result is a blistering 344whp, though 400whp should be no problem for this turbocharger. Congratulations, we’re happy to see the progress on the Genesis Coupe 2.0T! Earlier this week we took apart the stock turbocharger assembly and in the process completely destroyed most of our stock fasteners. We ordered new hardware but while our stock turbo was at the machine shop having everything drilled out and and re-tapped we decideded to see what we had on the shelf. After all we couldn’t put development on hold for many of our new products. Low and behold we found a brand new GT3076 turbo! Although I can’t really explain how we mounted it yet (prototype products and I don’t want to say anything until we finalize design) lets just say once its done you will be as excited as we are. Another point to note, our prototype exhaust system is out being prepared for production, so this is through the stock cat-back exhaust system!

Turbo cars like flow. They like a lot of flow. Uncork the exhaust and you can get a substantial gain as the efficiency of the turbocharger increases. Besides the benefit of extra power, you will also get decreased spool time and lowered EGT’s. To top it off, these downpipes are coated in a matte black coating to prevent corrosion and retain heat where it belongs – in the exhaust stream and not heating up your engine bay. This will increase performance and decrease lag from the turbo. This will also help keep EGT’s down during all operation times. Installation takes less than 30 min by an inexperienced person with basic tools.

Something as simple as cams…okay not so simple, but installing them in conjunction with an ECU flash has shown to provide a very healthy boost in power, around a 40hp increase at the wheels. It’s not peak horsepower either, it shows a rapidly increasing gap between 3500 RPM all the way to redline. See the thread here, or click on the dyno graph to see a bigger version!

Mark Takahashi of Edmunds Blogs writes about his recent trip to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, just outside if Las Vegas. There, he was treated to a Genesis Coupe, a willing instructor, and lots of open tarmac in three flavors: A racetrack, a short autocross, and a skidpad. Suffice it to say, he had fun, while his tire-destroying mayhen piqued his interest in modding the car. His thoughts? It needs the V8 from the Genesis sedan, a stiffer suspension with wider tires and a more aggressive front bumper. Me? I’d take the 2.0T R-Spec, shove a huge turbo on there with some nice tires, and go for a weekend of racing at my local track. To hell with the warranty, you have to pay to play. It’s a fair assumption that the Genesis will be the Coupe-du-jour for the tuner and track crowd for a while for many good reasons (a low price being one of the biggest). On the track, the Coupe’s short wheelbase, taut suspension and quick steering provide a level of confidence and immediacy that is on par with a BMW’s 1 Series. Keeping the Genesis’ nose pointed just where you intend is easy as tapping your right foot.
