SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association), hosted this year from November 3rd to November 6th, is slated to have a strong injection of Genesis Coupe straight from Hyundai and Rhys Millen Racing (RMR).

Taking the already potent Genesis Coupe a step further, they have developed a new RM460 Genesis Coupe, with a mid-mounted 4.6L Tau V8 powerplant. With over 500hp contained in the Genesis Coupe, RMR is hoping for a killer combination both on the track and on the street!

[Source: Hyundai Press Release]

The Tau V8 engine replaces the original back seat and maintains most of its original architecture with upgrades to eight individual throttle bodies and a set of JE pistons that bumps the compression ratio to 11.0:1. An engine management system by AEM has been added to speak to the factory Engine Control Unit (ECU) while maintaining all factory dash and gauge cluster functions. A Mendeola five-speed sequential transmission has been mounted to the V8 and tuned for a maximum speed of 182 mph. Suspension will be maintained by the original MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup, and upgraded with a KW coilover component.

Previously , Rhys Millen’s drift Genesis Coupe was powered by a turbocharged Nissan powerplant – because they stated the Hyundai powerplant was too new and they were not sure of it capebilities. It seems they’ve poked and prodded, and finally gave the engine the thumbs up. The new powerplant for Rhys Millen’s drift Genesis Coupe is the 3.8L V6 with a hefty turbocharger, bumping power to 480hp and 570lb-ft of torque, all from 9psi and it’s mostly stock internals and stock 3.8L displacement. Impressive!

[Source: Autoblog]

To start with, the engine is running with mostly stock internals and its original 3.8-liter displacement. Over the weekend, the team ran the engine on the dyno and squeezed out 480 hp at 4,500 rpm and 570 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. They achieved those numbers with just 9 psi of boost from the turbo. The engine is now in the car and Millen will be competing with Hyundai power at Round 2 of the formula D championship at Road Atlanta this weekend.

They also hint that a kit may be available soon over in the states, so keep your eyes peeled! I’m wondering what they’re using for engine management and fueling, as they seem pretty tight lipped about the deal.

AMS did a little hunting around the boost system of the Genesis Coupe in an attempt to see if the BOV is related to the rev-hang issue that people have been reporting. Ivan from AMS installed a prototype BOV system on their Genesis Coupe 2.0T and has posted up his findings, that the rev hang issues seem to be fixed by installing a custom BOV setup. More information here along with pictures!

[Source: AMS Performance via Genesis Owners Forums]

To test this theory, I made a hard pipe to replace soft hose between the throttle body and the factory hard pipe. I installed a Tial Q BOV in the new pipe to supplement the factory BOV. With this installed, the delay getting back into power after a fast shift was nearly eliminated!

At this point, I had the Tial Q plumbed into the vacuum port on the intake manifold. Plumbed like this, you could hear the factory BOV and the Tial Q open at different times. The factory BOV opens first (when the ECU commands it) using vacuum from the vacuum reservoir and then you hear the Tial when the throttle finally closes and the manifold goes into vacuum. This again supports my theory.

One of the biggest questions on everybody’s minds may be, “How did they get this thing together so quickly?” We knew in order to show up and play ball in this game we had to come big and fast, or go home. We studied the service manuals and even ordered a long block long before we even secured our Coupe. We knew that not only did we want to be first to the plate with our offerings; we wanted to make sure our plans were going to work, be solid, and perform extremely well for your dollar.

Beyond Redline wastes no time at all – shortly after taking apart the engine to examine it, then taking apart the turbo to poke around, now they have bolted a new Garrett GT3076 turbo on with 600cc injectors and done a little tuning of the car with a AEM FIC. The end result is a blistering 344whp, though 400whp should be no problem for this turbocharger. Congratulations, we’re happy to see the progress on the Genesis Coupe 2.0T! Check out the ongoing discussion here at GenCoupe forums.

Earlier this week we took apart the stock turbocharger assembly and in the process completely destroyed most of our stock fasteners. We ordered new hardware but while our stock turbo was at the machine shop having everything drilled out and and re-tapped we decideded to see what we had on the shelf. After all we couldn’t put development on hold for many of our new products. Low and behold we found a brand new GT3076 turbo! Although I can’t really explain how we mounted it yet (prototype products and I don’t want to say anything until we finalize design) lets just say once its done you will be as excited as we are. Another point to note, our prototype exhaust system is out being prepared for production, so this is through the stock cat-back exhaust system!

Turbo cars like flow. They like a lot of flow. Uncork the exhaust and you can get a substantial gain as the efficiency of the turbocharger increases. Besides the benefit of extra power, you will also get decreased spool time and lowered EGT’s. To top it off, these downpipes are coated in a matte black coating to prevent corrosion and retain heat where it belongs – in the exhaust stream and not heating up your engine bay. Remember that GenesisDriven readers get a 5% discount by using code “genesisdriven5off” at checkout!

This will increase performance and decrease lag from the turbo. This will also help keep EGT’s down during all operation times. Installation takes less than 30 min by an inexperienced person with basic tools.

The internet is abuzz with information about the Genesis Coupe that Rhys Millen Racing is using – it’s a heavily modified Genesis Coupe powered by a turbocharged 4 liter Nissan motor, a combination that is sure to produce quite a show of power. Sources say that the Nissan powerplant was chosen because of it’s penchant for power on short notice, but RMR will be switching back to the Lambda V6 once they sort out how to coax the same tire smoking power out of it.
