AMS did a little hunting around the boost system of the Genesis Coupe in an attempt to see if the BOV is related to the rev-hang issue that people have been reporting. Ivan from AMS installed a prototype BOV system on their Genesis Coupe 2.0T and has posted up his findings, that the rev hang issues seem to be fixed by installing a custom BOV setup. To test this theory, I made a hard pipe to replace soft hose between the throttle body and the factory hard pipe. I installed a Tial Q BOV in the new pipe to supplement the factory BOV. With this installed, the delay getting back into power after a fast shift was nearly eliminated!

At this point, I had the Tial Q plumbed into the vacuum port on the intake manifold. Plumbed like this, you could hear the factory BOV and the Tial Q open at different times. The factory BOV opens first (when the ECU commands it) using vacuum from the vacuum reservoir and then you hear the Tial when the throttle finally closes and the manifold goes into vacuum. This again supports my theory.

Again, the folks over at AMS Performance know their priorities, as the secret to good tuning is good fuel control. They took apart the fuel system, pulled out the fuel pump, and posted the results of some bench testing. The fuel pump looks easy to get to and provides nearly the same flow as a Lancer Evolution XI fuel pump – about 212LPH at 45 PSI. In comparason the Walbro 255 fuel pump squirts at around 280LPH at 45 PSI. You can check out their results here, or click “Read more” to see the images we have mirrored. 

The fuel tank has a hump in the center for drive shaft clearance which basically splits the tank into two sections. This is what is known as a “saddle tank”. Because of the “saddle” design of the tank, a fuel transfer tube is needed to keep fuel on the side of the tank that the fuel pump is on. 

Again, AMS Performance spares no effort, and wastes no time in putting their 2.0T Genesis Coupe under the knife. This time, they have the Genesis Coupe on a lift, and they examine the exhaust system in detail. The exhaust system is made out of 60mm (2 3/8″) piping, with a neckdown to 45mm  (1 3/4″) near a crossmember. Plenty of room for improvement. One good thing to note is that the O2 sensor is before the catalytic converter – there is no post-cat O2 sensor. This means the car isn’t going to throw a CEL when a catless exhaust is bolted on. We had a chance to get the Coupe up on the lift today to explore designs for the AMS Gen Coupe exhaust. The factory exhaust leaves a bit to be desired. The exhaust is approximately 2 3/8″ OD (60mm) and is even crushed down to 1 3/4″ to clear the factory body brace in one spot.

AMS Performance is wasting no time at all getting their hands dirty with their new 2.0T Genesis Coupe. Their latest development is a BPV block-off plate – since the BPV on the 2.0T is on the turbocharger itself, this place removes that BPV and allows for a BOV or BPV placed along the charge piping, a more traditional location and easiar to access. Just wanted to post up a little CAD shot of our new BOV block off plate that should be available very soon. This will enable you to remove the weak factory BOV on the turbine housing and block it off. Doing so will allow you to run a more traditional Blow off valve and get rid of the problem with the factory unit staying open in the event the ECU deems the boost is too high.

As of 3pm this afternoon we picked up our first Genesis 2.0T Track coupe. Our special projects technician Ivan Phipps just signed the paperwork. We drove it right to the shop and started our long but detailed analysis of what needs to be done.

1. The exhaust is pretty bottlenecked as we expected…big room for improvement there
2. There is CAVERNOUS room for an AMS Turbo kit so see that in the very near future
3. IC pipe and an intake should be able to be worked up very quickly
4. The tuners here are already on the case for re mapping the ECU
5. Looks to be a returnless fuel system so we will have to fix that.
6. Speed density for air metering so a vent to atmosphere BOV should work without a hitch on the car

One of the employees at AMS Performance have purchased a Genesis Coupe. The official word from AMS, as sourced here from Genesis Owners is that fabrication and production of a full line of parts will be done for the car. In case you didn’t know, AMS has built one of the fastest Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions in the world, and they intend to continue with the tradition with the new Lancer Evolution X. Since they have a very similar engine design, expect to see AMS Performance make big big power with the new Genesis Coupe!

This brings me to our latest project. Ivan one of our lead technicians is purchasing a Genesus coupe 2.0T. This year AMS will be working with the 2.0T and producing a full line of parts.
