Over 250 delicious turbocharged horsepower, a great suspension, and at a price that can&#8217;t be beat makes the MazdaSpeed 3 a true enthusiast&#8217;s car. When Mazda came out with the new improved 2010 &#8216;Speed 3, there was now a competitor on the block for the cheap and fun performance. The Genesis Coupe has taken the tuner market by storm, with it&#8217;s stout 2.0T, or the impressive 3.8L V6 at it&#8217;s disposal. However, to compete in raw power with the &#8216;Speed 3, we have to reach for the 3.8L V6. FWD vs RWD? Turbo 4 vs. V6? At 103.9 inches, the Mazda&#8217;s wheelbase is more than 7 inches shorter than the Hyundai&#8217;s — no small difference when it comes to changing direction quickly.</em></p>

He has some good points &#8211; Pontiac has been known for putting out cheap fun for a long time. The GTO? Yep, tire-eating American rear-drive V8. The Solstace? Top-down canyon carving turbocharged roadster. And lets not forget the short lived G8 &#8211; cheap, powerful, RWD V8 mayhem. What Pontiac was missing was something to fill the gap between compulsive-tire-shredder V8&#8242;s and petite twisty-conquering roadsters. </p>

<p>Mark Takahashi of Edmunds Blogs writes about his recent trip to <a href="http://www.springmountainmotorsports.com/" target="_blank">Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch</a>, just outside if Las Vegas. There, he was treated to a Genesis Coupe, a willing instructor, and lots of open tarmac in three flavors: A racetrack, a short autocross, and a skidpad. Suffice it to say, he had fun, while his tire-destroying mayhen piqued his interest in modding the car. His thoughts? It needs the V8 from the Genesis sedan, a stiffer suspension with wider tires and a more aggressive front bumper. Me? I&#8217;d take the 2.0T R-Spec, shove a huge turbo on there with some nice tires, and go for a weekend of racing at my local track. <p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>It&#8217;s a fair assumption that the Genesis will be the Coupe-du-jour for the tuner and track crowd for a while for many good reasons (a low price being one of the biggest). On the track, the Coupe&#8217;s short wheelbase, taut suspension and quick steering provide a level of confidence and immediacy that is on par with a BMW&#8217;s 1 Series. Keeping the Genesis&#8217; nose pointed just where you intend is easy as tapping your right foot.</em></p>

<p>Edmunds Inside Line got their hands on a 2.0T Track and spend a little time throwing the car around and wrote up a good review. They like the sharp looks, good driving feel, and the stiff chassis. They didn&#8217;t like the wheezy and asthmatic 2.0T motor. They did a little more snooping and found that the engine uses all cast internals and had restricive intake ports and a tiny single scroll turbo. They also keep comparing it to the Lancer Evolution X, but in reality the motor is more like the Rallispec. I&#8217;m sure tuners like Beyond Redline will be able to make more sense out of the car. Hyundai says its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generates 210 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel, and like most factory ratings for turbo cars, those numbers are a bit on the conservative side.</em></p>

Well it turns out Hyundai didn&#8217;t think those numbers were right either, so they worked it out with Edmunds and found a few problems. Worn tires, a bad alignment, and an over-zealous ECU were to blame. With these issues fixed, Edmunds takes ther V6 coupe out to the track again, this time with much more promising numbers! <strong>Good thing is that Hyundai is already working with dealers to address the ECU problem, and reflashes are on the way to eleminate the 3 second shift delay.
