In case you’ve been living in a cave for the past few years, you’d know that the MazdaSpeed 3 has been one of the best bang-for-the-buck cars in a long time. Over 250 delicious turbocharged horsepower, a great suspension, and at a price that can’t be beat makes the MazdaSpeed 3 a true enthusiast’s car. When Mazda came out with the new improved 2010 ‘Speed 3, there was now a competitor on the block for the cheap and fun performance. The Genesis Coupe has taken the tuner market by storm, with it’s stout 2.0T, or the impressive 3.8L V6 at it’s disposal. However, to compete in raw power with the ‘Speed 3, we have to reach for the 3.8L V6. FWD vs RWD? Turbo 4 vs. V6? Hatchback vs. svelte coupe? Edmunds Inside Line has all the details in their shootout.

Here are two cars that couldn’t be more different in appearance and layout. Hatchback vs. coupe. Front-wheel drive vs. rear-wheel drive. Turbocharged inline-4 vs. normally aspirated V6. And certainly both go about their missions with decidedly different packaging. At 103.9 inches, the Mazda’s wheelbase is more than 7 inches shorter than the Hyundai’s — no small difference when it comes to changing direction quickly.

Edmunds blogs has an interesting write-up oh why the Genesis Coupe should have been made by Pontiac, the soon-to-be dead sports branch of GM. He has some good points – Pontiac has been known for putting out cheap fun for a long time. The GTO? Yep, tire-eating American rear-drive V8. The Solstace? Top-down canyon carving turbocharged roadster. And lets not forget the short lived G8 – cheap, powerful, RWD V8 mayhem. What Pontiac was missing was something to fill the gap between compulsive-tire-shredder V8′s and petite twisty-conquering roadsters.

Well, let’s start with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. $22,000. Turbo engine. Rear-wheel drive. It should be a Pontiac. Talk about a modern-day GTO or Firebird.

Hyundai says it wasn’t out to build a better Mustang when it was designing the 2010 Genesis Coupe. Maybe so, but it’s hard to ignore the similarities between the new Korean coupe and the latest Ford Mustang GT.

They have just over 300 horsepower, rear-wheel drive and similar price tags. They also have surprisingly comfortable interiors with four seats and all the latest technology.

The internet is abuzz with information about the Genesis Coupe that Rhys Millen Racing is using – it’s a heavily modified Genesis Coupe powered by a turbocharged 4 liter Nissan motor, a combination that is sure to produce quite a show of power. Sources say that the Nissan powerplant was chosen because of it’s penchant for power on short notice, but RMR will be switching back to the Lambda V6 once they sort out how to coax the same tire smoking power out of it. Mark Takahashi of Edmunds Blogs writes about his recent trip to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, just outside if Las Vegas. There, he was treated to a Genesis Coupe, a willing instructor, and lots of open tarmac in three flavors: A racetrack, a short autocross, and a skidpad. Suffice it to say, he had fun, while his tire-destroying mayhen piqued his interest in modding the car. His thoughts? It needs the V8 from the Genesis sedan, a stiffer suspension with wider tires and a more aggressive front bumper. Me? I’d take the 2.0T R-Spec, shove a huge turbo on there with some nice tires, and go for a weekend of racing at my local track. To hell with the warranty, you have to pay to play. It’s a fair assumption that the Genesis will be the Coupe-du-jour for the tuner and track crowd for a while for many good reasons (a low price being one of the biggest). On the track, the Coupe’s short wheelbase, taut suspension and quick steering provide a level of confidence and immediacy that is on par with a BMW’s 1 Series. Keeping the Genesis’ nose pointed just where you intend is easy as tapping your right foot.

Edmunds Inside Line got their hands on a 2.0T Track and spend a little time throwing the car around and wrote up a good review. They like the sharp looks, good driving feel, and the stiff chassis. They didn’t like the wheezy and asthmatic 2.0T motor. They did a little more snooping and found that the engine uses all cast internals and had restricive intake ports and a tiny single scroll turbo. They also keep comparing it to the Lancer Evolution X, but in reality the motor is more like the Rallispec. I’m sure tuners like Beyond Redline will be able to make more sense out of the car. Adventurous and even extravagant styling, a breath of beauty. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine that tries to give you both power and fuel economy, a real statement of modernity. And coupe packaging, something expressive and personal instead of politically correct.

Edmund’s Inside Line has just pitted the 2010 model year Genesis Coupe against the 2010 Camaro, and the results aren’t what you would expect. Both cars do great, but the while the Genesis Coupe holds the upper hand with it’s quick 0-60 times, the Camaro hold the advantage for higher skidpad numbers. Finally some solid numbers on the 2.0T motor – Edmunds has dyno tested the little beauty and found that it makes very healthy numbers. Perhaps Hyundai is learning from it’s mistakes with the Tiburon? We tested a bone stock Genesis Coupe 2.0T on MD Automotive’s Dynojet chassis dyno located in Westminster, CA. Hyundai says its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generates 210 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel, and like most factory ratings for turbo cars, those numbers are a bit on the conservative side.

Remember in this article when Edmunds said they couldn’t get the numbers they were hoping for in a 300HP RWD coupe? Well it turns out Hyundai didn’t think those numbers were right either, so they worked it out with Edmunds and found a few problems. Worn tires, a bad alignment, and an over-zealous ECU were to blame. With these issues fixed, Edmunds takes ther V6 coupe out to the track again, this time with much more promising numbers! Good thing is that Hyundai is already working with dealers to address the ECU problem, and reflashes are on the way to eleminate the 3 second shift delay.
