Its the battle of the decade, with Chevy’s legendary iconic Camaro pitted against the newcomer lightweight the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. With a fair spread of horsepower between their V6 powerplants, it’s down to technical details, seat of the pants, and geek speak numbers to determine who comes down on top. Todd Lassa of Motor Trend takes a peek and has a go at throwing both around a bit. One thing they did notice with full throttle shifts with the Genesis Coupe…was no, not the temporary power cut, but an odd squeak from the engine bay, like a squeaky belt. Today’s spoiler comes from South Korea, not Japan. The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, with rear drive and turbo-four or V-6 power, is about eight inches shorter than the Camaro, or half a foot shorter than the Mustang. Although it shares components with the Genesis sedan, it’s been designed specifically to be too small to take the sedan’s optional 4.6-liter Tau V-8 in its engine bay.

Edward Loh over at MotorTrend has done a quick short comparison between the Genesis Coupe 3.8L and the 2010 Chevy Camaro V6. Though they’re not back to back driving impressions, Edward shares his thoughts and opinions over both cars. What seems like the killer for me on the Camaro is that while it may be a few grand cheaper, it is considerably heavier and has a cluttered low-tech feeling interior. I understand the desire for a throwback to the heritage of the Camaro, but I feel the car looks like a bathtub with wheels. Right away you can see that these two are primed for an octagon style face off. A slightly larger (+200cc) engine yields a two horsepower advantage for the Hyundai but seven less pound-feet of torque. The Genesis Coupe is half a second quicker to 60 mph and full sixth tenths swifter through the quarter mile, primarily due to its 300 pound weight advantage. Our test crew informs me the conditions weren’t exactly ideal and that you could see the Camaro times drop a couple of tenths in warmer conditions. Still, it’s impressive that a Korean upstart stomps all over one of America’s proudest pony cars at the drag strip.

Back in December of 2007, before I jumped over to Motor Trend from the now defunct Sport Compact Car, I wrote about my hopes and dreams for a car which I had pegged as the next generation Hyundai Tiburon

After all the V6 reviews have settled down a little bit, we finally have some 2.0T numbers in, and right along here is MotorTrend. The numbers are terrible, but they’re not impressive either. What the market is really looking for is a great little turbo motor to tune and improve and the 2.0T is exactly what we’re looking for. Click here for the review, along with some great pictures! As its badge suggests, the 2.0T Track receives Hyundai’s 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 210 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 223 pound-feet of torque at 2000. Compared to the V-6, that translates to 96 fewer horses but only 43 less pound-feet.

Good news for Hyundai – the Genesis Coupe is flying out of the dealers as sales of the Coupe soar, even before the cheaper 2.0T or the track ready R-Spec is up for sale. Suprising is that Hyundai says they did significantly less marketing with the new coupe – I believe they just simply targeted a different audience, which proved to be much more effective. According to Krafcik, initial sales for the Genesis Coupe have been even hotter than the luxury-oriented Genesis sedan, even with “significantly less” marketing. While 2.0T models have just begun heading to dealers, making it impossible to say what the powertrain split will look like, word is that among the 3.8-liter cars currently in showrooms, over 50% of buyers are opting for the Grand Touring trim level.

Its about time someone came up with a more broad comparason between the Genesis Coupe and it’s closest competitors. However, after reading the review, I was quite suprised at the result. Even though the figures were slightly unexpected, the Genesis Coupe still comes out as the least expensive of the bunch, and still covered with the best purchase protection of Hyundai Assurance. With sporty looks, solid performance, and value pricing, the Genesis Coupe follows a tried and true formula, one that was first nailed by the original Ford Mustang, and later successfully aped by Nissan‘s Z-cars. Both the Mustang and the Z have changed over the decades, each going through its lost, Elvis-in-Vegas years, getting fat, slow and soft. But the 2010 Mustang GT and Nissan 370Z are cars that successfully channel the DNA of their original ancestors.
